Heidelberg is placed along the Neckar river in the valley of Odenwald. It is Germany’s oldest university city and has preserved its baroque styled narrow streets, brick roads, attractive old houses, bridges and world famous castle ruins.
We reached the town in a bright late afternoon and we were greeted with scenic views as we journeyed along the river. I admired those picturesque old bridges clearly seen on my side window. Our next activity was a city sightseeing walking tour along a long pedestrian road called Hauptstraße. From the road, we saw this beautiful old castle of Heidelberg. Few steps away, we witnessed the statue of the Madonna at the Kornmarkt and found more statues of the lady in the houses and buildings in this Catholic dominated city.
Hauptstraße is the main shopping street in the city. Along this narrow road, we passed the Marktplatz or the Market Square, a beautiful place to chill out. Then found some souvenir shops and took the chance to buy a magnet and a snow globe where I negotiated for a dollar discount. I went to one of the of bakeries to try out the local delicacy called 'Schneeball.' See read about this pastry in the related article.
Across the bakery and beside the Marktplatz is an old church. Church of Holy Spirit was used to be a Roman Catholic, but it converted to Protestant during of the reign of Prince Karl Philip in 1685. We waited until the concert practice ended before we were able to get inside the church and took some pictures.
We headed our way to the Neckar river and took our chance to take a closer look at the amazing bridge - Alte Brucke. Check out more pictures of the bridge at the bottom.
Then we went back to where we started our walking tour and drove to our hotel for check-in.
